Governors in a Catholic school are required to preserve and develop the Catholic character of the school in addition to their other legal duties.  Foundation governors always out number all other governors by at least two ensuring a majority vote where matters of particular Catholic importance arise.

The Governing Body of our school has the following core strategic functions:

  • Ensuring clarity of the Catholic vision, ethos and strategic direction
  • Holding the HT to account for the educational performance and Catholic character of the school and its pupils; and
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.

All our governors are committed and respected members of our community. They bring a wealth of expertise and experience and therefore, our Governing Body is an asset to our school.

 

CATEGORIES OF GOVERNORS

Each of the various categories of governor has its own eligibility criteria and means of appointment. Once appointed or elected, all governors must operate in the best interest of the pupils as their task is to govern the school.

 

FOUNDATION GOVERNORS

Foundation governors are either appointed or take the role by virtue of the office they hold. They:

  • Are appointed by the Diocese
  • Serve for a period of four years.

Foundation Governors are appointed by the Diocese to ensure the school’s character is preserved and developed and that the school is run in line with the provisions of any trust deed.

Mrs Bremner

Parent and staff governors speak and act as individuals. They are not delegates or the spokesperson of parents/staff and they do not vote for all parents/staff in general. They have equal status and voting rights in the work of the Governing Board.

At St Thomas of Canterbury School, we also have Associate Members and whilst they cannot vote on decisions, they provide useful expertise to the work of the Governing Body with their specific skills.

 

COMMITTEES

The full Governing Body meets to discuss developments and receive feedback from the various committees that are established to look at specific aspects of school life. Meetings of the full Governing Body take place each half term with committee meetings held prior to the main meetings. In 2017/2018, the Governing Body has the following main committees:

THE FINANCE COMMITTEE
